Lab-grown diamonds
What is a lab-grown diamond?
A lab-grown diamond is a diamond that was grown in a laboratory instead of being mined. It is pure crystallised carbon, with the same chemical, physical and optical properties as a mined diamond. The only difference is where it formed.
Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?
Yes. A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. It is made of the same carbon crystal as a mined diamond, with the same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale and the same brilliance. In 2018 the United States Federal Trade Commission removed the word "natural" from its definition of a diamond for this reason.
What is the difference between a lab-grown and a natural diamond?
Only where they come from. Both are diamond, with the same hardness, the same brilliance and the same grading. A natural diamond formed deep in the earth over one to three billion years and was mined. A lab-grown diamond was grown in a laboratory in a few weeks. It costs considerably less, and its grading report states that it is laboratory-grown. See lab-grown and natural diamonds compared.
Can anyone tell a lab-grown diamond from a mined one?
Not by eye, and not with a jeweler's loupe. A lab-grown diamond and a mined diamond look identical. Telling them apart takes laboratory instruments that read growth patterns and trace elements. Graded lab-grown diamonds usually carry a laser inscription on the girdle that says so.
How are lab-grown diamonds made?
By one of two methods. High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) dissolves carbon in molten metal and crystallises it on a diamond seed under immense pressure. Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) breaks down a carbon-rich gas in a vacuum chamber so that carbon settles on a seed, layer by layer. Both take a few weeks.
Does a lab-grown diamond pass a diamond tester?
Yes. A standard diamond tester measures how well a stone conducts heat, and a lab-grown diamond conducts heat exactly as a mined diamond does. Cubic zirconia does not pass. Moissanite needs a second, electrical test to be told apart.
Is a lab-grown diamond the same as moissanite or cubic zirconia?
No. Moissanite and cubic zirconia are diamond simulants. They are different materials that only resemble diamond. Moissanite is silicon carbide and cubic zirconia is zirconium dioxide. A lab-grown diamond is diamond. See lab-grown diamond or moissanite.
Do lab-grown diamonds last?
Yes. Diamond is the hardest natural material known, and a lab-grown diamond is diamond. It does not cloud, fade or change colour with time. Like any diamond it can chip if it is struck hard on its edge, so the setting matters.
Are lab-grown diamonds cheaper than mined diamonds?
Yes. A lab-grown diamond costs considerably less than a mined diamond of the same cut, colour, clarity and carat, because it does not carry the cost of mining and its supply is not limited in the same way. Most people use the difference to choose a larger or better cut stone.
Do lab-grown diamonds hold their value?
Buy a diamond to wear it, not as an investment. Most diamonds, mined or lab-grown, resell for less than their retail price, and lab-grown diamonds currently resell for less than mined ones. Their value is in what you get for the price on the day you buy.
Are lab-grown diamonds graded and certified?
Yes. Independent laboratories such as IGI and GIA examine lab-grown diamonds and issue a report for each stone. IGI grades them on the same cut, colour, clarity and carat scales used for mined diamonds. Since late 2025 GIA describes lab-grown diamonds as premium or standard instead of giving colour and clarity letter grades.

ART
Does ART use mined diamonds?
No. ART works only with lab-grown diamonds, in every piece and at every size.
Where is ART based?
ART is Art Jewelry, a jewelry house from Lebanon. Its website is artjewelrylb.com.
What metals does ART work in?
Pieces are made in 18k gold, in white, yellow or rose. 18k gold is 75 percent pure gold, the standard for fine jewelry in Lebanon. Ask if you would like to see a piece in a particular colour of gold.
What does 18k gold mean?
18k gold is 75 percent pure gold. The other 25 percent is other metals, which give it strength and its colour: yellow, white or rose. It is stamped 750. The guide to gold explains karats and colours.
Does my diamond come with a certificate?
Centre stones come with a grading report from an independent laboratory. The report records the cut, colour, clarity and carat weight of the diamond and states that it is laboratory-grown. The report number is usually inscribed on the edge of the stone.

Ordering
How do I order a piece from ART?
Send an enquiry from the contact page or from the page of the piece you like. We reply with the options for stone, metal and size, a price and a date. Nothing is made, and nothing is paid, until you have agreed to all of it in writing.
How much does a piece cost?
Every piece is made to order, so the price depends on the diamond you choose and the metal. We quote each piece individually and free of charge. Tell us a budget and we will show you what it reaches.
Does ART deliver?
Tell us where you are when you enquire and we will confirm how your piece can reach you, and what it costs, together with your quote.
How do I find my ring size?
Measure the inside diameter of a ring that fits the same finger, or wrap a strip of paper around the finger and measure its length. The ring size guide converts both to a size.
Which engagement ring setting is the most secure?
A bezel, which wraps the whole edge of the diamond in metal, is the most secure setting. Among claw settings, six claws hold a stone more securely than four. The guide to settings compares them.

Bespoke
Can ART make a custom piece?
Yes. Bespoke work is half of what we do. Tell us the idea, the occasion and a budget. We draw the piece, propose the diamonds and make it once you have approved the design. See how a commission works.
How long does a custom piece take?
It depends on the design and on the stone. We give you a date before any work begins. If you need the piece for a particular day, tell us at the start.
Can ART reset a diamond I already own?
Ask us. ART sets lab-grown diamonds in its own designs. If you have a stone or a piece you would like remade, send a picture and its details and we will tell you honestly whether we can help.

Care
How do I care for diamond jewelry?
Clean it in warm water with a drop of mild soap and a soft brush, then rinse and dry it. Take it off for the gym, the pool and heavy work. Store each piece separately, because a diamond will scratch gold and other stones. The care guide has the details.
Can lab-grown diamond jewelry be insured?
Yes. Lab-grown diamond jewelry is insured like any other fine jewelry. An insurer will usually ask for the receipt and for the grading report of the centre stone, and covers the piece for what it would cost to replace.
